If your computer is running slow there are a bunch of options to bring back the speed and get your computer running well. This is someone we hear about a lot from our customers. We usually get a call from someone saying, “my computer is running slow” or “it’s not as fast as it used to be.” These are very common. Here at Simple Computer Support we have been successful at bringing back fast computer speeds by doing the following.
Check the hard drive
One of the first things we do on a slow computer is check your hard drive. If you have a bad hard drive with disk errors your computer is going to run slow. There is no software that will repair a damaged hard drive.
Install a solid-state hard drive (SSD)
If we find that a customer has a bad hard drive, we will recommend replacing the drive with a solid-state hard drive. This will give you a speed increase that you can really feel. One of the main jobs your computer does is store data on the hard drive. Replacing the hard drive with a solid-state hard drive will increase the speed of everything Windows does. From booting up to running programs having a faster rated hard drive will increase your speeds.
Investigate the startup and installed applications
Lots of customers will go out and buy a laptop and just start using it. If you buy a laptop from BestBuy and other big box store – you will get all the default manufactures software on your system. A lot of this software can be removed. The other downside is that all this software is usually set to load when your computer boots up.
Add additional RAM (memory)
A lot of systems we have seen are lacking on RAM. Today with Windows 10, your computer should have at least 8GB of RAM. Having new laptop that is an i5 or an i7 with 4GB of Ram is simply not enough. Really, your laptop should have 8GB or if you can afford it 16GB is a decent amount. Some people say you should have 24GB of RAM but that seems a little overkill.
Remove heavy applications like antivirus
There are software applications that can drastically slow down your computer. Over the years we have see antivirus like Norton suck up resources on a system and bring the speed down drastically. Customers get a sweet new computer and install an antivirus like Norton that slows the speeds down. Sometimes this alone can speed up the computer and that can save money on computer upgrades.
These are just a few examples of how we can speed up your computer. Your best bet is to talk to an experienced technician that will be able to properly assess your system properly. If you need some help with this process, please email us at email@example.com
